Is GPT-6 Astra free? What you actually get, and what you have to pay for
OpenAI's newest model has no free consumer tier. Here is which plans include it, why the sites promising free access are not what they look like, and the legitimate ways students get it without paying full price.
If you have searched for a way to use GPT-6 Astra without paying, you have probably found a dozen pages promising exactly that. Most of them are not telling you the truth. This article gives you the short answer first, then the sourced detail, then the routes that genuinely work.
What GPT-6 Astra actually is
GPT-6 Astra is OpenAI's current flagship model. It went to a limited set of organisations on 3 September 2026 and reached general availability the following day. OpenAI describes it as a generational leap, with particular strength in cybersecurity, professional work, software engineering and science, and says it is faster and capable of more tasks than any previous version.
The scale behind it is worth knowing, because it explains the price. OpenAI says the training run used more than 100,000 GPUs at its Stargate site in Texas — the largest training run the company has done. Models at that scale do not get given away.
One detail that surprised people: when paid users received it on 4 September, they got a restricted version that refuses certain prompts, particularly in cybersecurity. If you hit a refusal on security research, that is deliberate, not a bug in your prompt.
Which plans include it
Availability differs by product, and this is where most confusion comes from:
- ChatGPT Plus — included in ChatGPT Work and Codex as the rollout proceeds.
- ChatGPT Pro ($100 and $200 tiers), Business and Enterprise — these get GPT-6 Pro, which is powered by GPT-6 Astra.
- OpenAI API, Microsoft Azure and AWS Bedrock — available to developers, billed per token.
- ChatGPT Free — not included. No announcement places Astra on the free plan.
Why we are not linking to the 'free GPT-6 Astra' sites
Search for free access and you will find chat sites offering the model with no sign-up, plus a category of 'free credits' API resellers. We are not linking to any of them, and here is the reasoning rather than just the verdict.
- A site giving away a model that costs real money per token is paying for your usage. Something has to fund that, and it is usually your prompts, your data, or an upsell.
- You cannot verify which model is actually answering. A page can label a response 'GPT-6 Astra' whatever produced it.
- Anything you paste — client work, code, personal documents — goes to a third party with no agreement with you.
If you want the real model, get it from OpenAI or from a cloud provider that resells it under contract. If you want it cheaply, use one of the routes below.
The legitimate ways to pay less
This is the part the other articles leave out. There are real, official programmes that reduce the cost to zero or near it — most of them for students, and all of them verified against the provider's own page.
1. The ChatGPT student offer
OpenAI runs a student offer giving several free monthly billing periods of ChatGPT Plus. It is verified through SheerID against eligible US degree-granting institutions, which is the catch: it is United States only. If you are outside the US, this one is not available to you, and we would rather say so than waste your time.
4 MONTHS FREE
2. Azure credit, if you want API access
GPT-6 Astra is available through Microsoft Azure. Microsoft's student programme gives $100 of Azure credit plus a set of free services, renewable annually, and it is open globally rather than to one country. If your goal is to build something rather than to chat, this is the most practical free route to a flagship model.
Microsoft Azure
$100 Azure credit, no card required
$100 CREDIT
3. AWS credits, for the same reason
Astra is also on AWS Bedrock. AWS runs a student programme covering Skill Builder access, credits and an exam voucher. The exact amounts change, so treat the figure on our listing as reported rather than confirmed and check the AWS page before relying on it.
Amazon Web Services

What to check before you pay
- Confirm the model is actually in your plan today, not just announced for it. Open the model picker and look.
- If you need cybersecurity or security-research answers, test that first — the released version refuses some of it.
- If you are buying for API use, price a realistic month at the per-token rate rather than assuming a subscription is cheaper.
- If you are a student, check the student offer before paying full price. Four free months is four months.
Subscription or API: which one you actually want
People often buy the wrong one. The two products solve different problems, and the cost difference between them can be an order of magnitude in either direction depending on how you work.
A ChatGPT subscription is a flat monthly fee for a chat interface with usage limits. You cannot script it, you cannot embed it in your own application, and you cannot control the system prompt. What you get is unlimited-feeling access for a predictable price, which is exactly right if you are using it as a thinking and writing tool during your day.
The API is billed per token, with no interface at all. It is the right choice if you are building something — an app, an agent, a batch job over thousands of documents. It becomes expensive fast if you use it casually, and it becomes far cheaper than a subscription if your actual usage is a few focused calls a week.
Common questions
Is there a free trial of ChatGPT Plus?
Not as a general offer. The student programme is the closest thing, and it is limited to verified students at eligible US degree-granting institutions. If you see a site advertising a general Plus free trial, check it against OpenAI's own pricing page before entering payment details.
Can I use GPT-6 Astra in Bangladesh?
Yes, if you pay for a qualifying plan or use the API — those are not region-locked in the way the student offer is. What is not available in Bangladesh is the ChatGPT student offer, which requires a US institution. This is the distinction that catches people out: the model is available, the discount is not.
Will Astra come to ChatGPT Free later?
OpenAI has historically moved older flagship models down to the free tier over time, so it is plausible. But nothing in the current documentation promises it, and we are not going to present a guess as a plan. If it happens, this article gets updated with the date it changed.
Is GPT-6 Pro the same as GPT-6 Astra?
Not quite. GPT-6 Pro is a product tier in ChatGPT that is powered by GPT-6 Astra, rolling out on the Pro $100 and $200 plans plus Business and Enterprise. Astra is the model; GPT-6 Pro is one way of getting at it.
