UTM parameters that do not quietly break your reports
Campaign tags are simple until three people tag the same campaign three ways. A naming scheme, the traps, and how to fix the reports you already broke.
UTM parameters are five words bolted onto the end of a link so your analytics can say where a visitor came from. They are trivial to add and unforgiving about detail, which is why so many reports show Facebook, facebook, FaceBook and fb as four different sources.
The five, and what each one is for
- utm_source: where the link lives. facebook, newsletter, partner-site.
- utm_medium: the kind of traffic. social, email, cpc, referral.
- utm_campaign: the thing you are running. spring-sale-2026.
- utm_content: which link, when a message has more than one. header-button, footer-link.
- utm_term: the paid keyword, which most people never need.
The rules that keep a report readable
- Lower case everything, always. Analytics treats Email and email as two mediums.
- Hyphens between words, never spaces. A space becomes %20 and looks broken in every report.
- Fix your vocabulary once and write it down. One list of allowed sources and mediums, shared with everyone who makes links.
- Use the same campaign name across every channel that promotes the same thing, so you can compare them.
- Never tag internal links. A tagged link from your own page restarts the session and destroys the record of where the visitor really came from.
Encoding, the part that silently breaks
Campaign names with an ampersand, a hash or a plus sign break the link if they are not encoded. The browser reads the ampersand as the start of a new parameter and everything after it disappears.
Fixing what is already broken
You cannot retag links that are already out in the world, but you can merge the mess in reporting by grouping the variants, and you can stop it spreading by publishing the vocabulary list today. Most teams find three or four sources are responsible for nearly all the duplication.
Common questions
Do UTM parameters hurt SEO?
Not when they are used on links from other sites. Avoid them on internal links, and make sure your pages have a canonical URL without parameters.
Are UTM tags visible to the visitor?
Yes, in the address bar. Keep campaign names sensible; customers do read them.
Do they work for email and print?
For email, yes. For print, put the tagged link behind a short URL on your own domain, or a QR code, rather than asking anyone to type it.
