GPT-6 Astra vs Claude Fable 5.1: which one can you actually get, and what does it cost?
Two flagship models launched days apart in September 2026. Rather than compare benchmark numbers each company chose itself, here is the comparison that decides it in practice: availability, price and what you can get without paying.
OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra on 3 September 2026. Anthropic had released Claude Fable 5.1 two days earlier, on 1 September. If you are choosing between them, most comparisons will show you a benchmark table. This one starts somewhere more useful.
Availability: who can actually use each one
This is the first filter, and for many people it settles the question outright.
- GPT-6 Astra — ChatGPT Plus (via Work and Codex), Pro, Business and Enterprise, plus the OpenAI API, Microsoft Azure and AWS Bedrock. Not on ChatGPT Free.
- Claude Fable 5.1 — Claude Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, plus the Claude API, AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure. Not on the Claude free plan.
So neither has a free consumer tier. The difference is what the free tier gives you instead, and that is where they diverge sharply.
The free tiers are not equivalent
Anthropic's free plan includes Claude Sonnet 5 as the default and Haiku 4.5 alongside it — current-generation models, available worldwide, no card required. That is a genuinely usable free product.
OpenAI's free tier does not include Astra, and the API's free usage tier does not support it. If your budget is zero and you are not a student in the United States, the free Claude plan is the more capable starting point today.
Price, where it is published
Anthropic publishes Fable 5.1 API pricing: $10 per million input tokens, $50 per million output tokens, and $0.25 per million cached input tokens — the last being a 75% reduction that matters a lot for repeated long contexts.
We are not quoting an API price for GPT-6 Astra, because we could not confirm one from OpenAI's own documentation at the time of writing. If you are budgeting for API use, price it from OpenAI's pricing page directly rather than from any figure you find on an aggregator, including this one.
Where each is pitched
- GPT-6 Astra — OpenAI emphasises cybersecurity, professional work, software engineering and science, and computer and web navigation. Note that the released version refuses some cybersecurity prompts.
- Claude Fable 5.1 — Anthropic emphasises long-running agentic work, large multi-file codebases, and scientific reasoning including experiment design and dense diagrams. The 5.1 release specifically reduced false-positive refusals.
How to choose without guessing
- If your budget is zero: use the Claude free plan. It is the only one of the two with current-generation models on a free tier.
- If you are a student in the US: check the ChatGPT student offer first — free months of Plus is the cheapest route to Astra.
- If you are building on an API: price both from the vendors' own pricing pages, and model your actual cached-versus-fresh token mix rather than the headline rate.
- If you need long agentic coding runs: that is the case Fable 5.1 was explicitly built and benchmarked for.
- If you need broad computer and web navigation: that is where OpenAI has put its emphasis with Astra.

The thing both launches have in common
Two flagship models, released two days apart, and neither is on a free consumer tier. That is not a coincidence and it is worth naming, because it changes how you should read every 'free access' page you will find about either.
Frontier models are now expensive enough to run that giving them away at consumer scale does not work. OpenAI says Astra's training used more than 100,000 GPUs. Anthropic charges $50 per million output tokens for Fable. When a site offers either one free and unlimited, the money is coming from somewhere — your data, an upsell, or a quota they will exhaust and then quietly downgrade you from.
The realistic paths are the boring ones: use a free tier that a vendor deliberately funds as a funnel, claim a student offer you actually qualify for, or pay per token for exactly what you use.
Common questions
Which is better for coding?
Both are pitched at it. Anthropic benchmarked Fable 5.1 specifically on multi-file, long-running coding work and published the numbers. OpenAI emphasises software engineering among Astra's strengths but we have not verified comparable figures. If your work is large-codebase refactoring, Fable 5.1 has the published evidence behind it; for anything else, trial both on your own repository, which is a better test than either company's benchmark.
Can I use both?
Yes, and many people do — a Claude subscription for long coding sessions and ChatGPT for everything else, or API access to both. If you are choosing what to pay for, start with one for a month rather than subscribing to both on day one.
Which is cheaper?
For consumer subscriptions the tiers are broadly comparable, and the answer depends on which tier you need. For API use we can only give you one side: Anthropic publishes $10 input, $50 output and $0.25 cached per million tokens for Fable 5.1. Price Astra from OpenAI's own pricing page — we are not going to quote a number we could not confirm.
Do either work in Bangladesh?
Paid access to both is generally available. The student discounts are the part that is US-restricted — the ChatGPT student offer requires a US institution, as does the Google AI Pro student offer. The Claude free plan is the most accessible option for someone outside the US paying nothing.
