How to brief a Fiverr freelancer so you get what you actually wanted
Most bad Fiverr orders are bad briefs. What to send, what to decide before you order, and the revision maths that decides whether a cheap gig stays cheap.
The complaint about Fiverr is almost always some version of "I paid and got something useless". Sometimes that is the seller. More often the brief left the important decisions to a stranger, and the stranger guessed.
Decide these before you order, not after
A freelancer cannot read your mind, and every question they have to guess at is a revision waiting to happen.
- What the thing is for, in one sentence. "A logo" is not a brief; "a logo for a Dhaka coffee roastery, used mostly on bags and Instagram" is.
- Who sees it, and where. Print and screen pull in different directions.
- What you already have — colours, fonts, an existing look — and what is genuinely open.
- Two or three examples you like, with a line on why. "Like this, but calmer" is worth a page of adjectives.
- One example you dislike. This saves more time than any of the above.
- The exact deliverables and file formats you need at the end.
Bring the decisions with you
The single best thing you can do for a design brief is turn up with the fixed parts already fixed. If your colours, fonts and logo treatment are settled before you order, the freelancer is executing rather than guessing, and the first draft lands much closer.

Read the gig properly before ordering
- Check what the tier you are buying actually includes — the cheapest tier often excludes the source files, which is the thing you most need later.
- Check the number of revisions, and what counts as one.
- Check the delivery time against your real deadline, then add margin.
- Read the seller's own FAQ. Most answer the questions buyers ask twice a week.
- Message before ordering with your one-sentence summary and ask whether it is a fit. A seller who says no is doing you a favour.
The revision maths
Revisions are where a cheap gig stops being cheap. A $30 gig with two revisions that you take four rounds on becomes a $30 gig plus two paid extras, plus a week — and each extra carries its own service fee, because every payment on Fiverr is charged separately.
Buying a slightly higher tier with more revisions included is often cheaper than buying the lowest tier and adding to it. Work out the likely total before ordering the cheapest option.
What to do when it comes back wrong
- Say what is wrong against the brief, not against your taste — "the brief asked for something calmer and this is quite loud" is actionable in a way that "I don't like it" is not.
- Be specific about what to keep. Sellers often throw away the good parts because nobody told them those were the good parts.
- If it is genuinely off-brief, say so early and politely. A cancellation agreed in the first round is much easier than one argued in the fourth.
- Leave the review you would want to read. The rating system only works if people use it honestly.
Common questions
Should I pick the cheapest seller?
Rarely. The gap between a $20 and a $60 gig is usually revisions, source files and the seller's own experience of what you are asking for. On the smallest orders Fiverr's flat $3.50 fee also means the cheapest gig is proportionally the most expensive.
Can I ask for a custom offer?
Yes, and for anything beyond a standard gig you should. It is also the point at which you can agree scope precisely, which is the whole argument of this article.
What if I need it urgently?
Most sellers offer paid express delivery. Buy it deliberately rather than hoping — and remember that a rushed brief plus a rushed delivery is how bad orders happen.
