How to use Claude free: the routes that actually exist

Search for a way to get Claude Pro free and you will find confident articles describing offers that do not exist, ended months ago, or were never what the headline said. Here is the version with the sources attached.

1. The free plan, which most people skip past

It is not a trial. It includes web search, file creation, running code, connecting apps and Artifacts. For a lot of people this is the answer and they never needed the rest of this article.

The catch is usage limits, not features. We wrote a separate piece on where those limits sit and how to get further inside them.

2. If you teach K-12 in the United States

Claude for Teachers gives verified US K-12 educators free access, and signing up by 30 June 2027 gets a full year. This is the single largest free offer on the list and it is the one most likely to be missed, because teachers are not the audience that reads AI pricing blogs.

3. Someone can gift you a subscription

Claude subscriptions can be given as a gift, with a choice of plan and a length of one, three, six or twelve months. This is a real route, it just involves someone else paying. Worth knowing when a birthday is coming and you are tired of being asked what you want.

4. Referral links and invite contests, with a caveat

Claude has a referral link you can share, and Anthropic has run invite contests where new signups earn entries for a prize such as months of a Max plan.

Read that carefully, because a lot of articles do not. Entries in a contest are not a free subscription. If someone tells you a referral link gets you Pro for free, ask them to show you the page that says so.

5. API credits for developers

If you are building rather than chatting, the developer console is a separate track with its own credit arrangements for new accounts. The amounts and the terms change, and they have changed more than once this year, so the only sensible advice is to open the console and read what it says today rather than trust a number in an article.

What does not work

• Shared logins. Against the terms, and it gets the account closed.
• Cracked or modded clients. They are credential theft with a nicer interface.
• Sites offering free Pro accounts for a survey. There is no such thing and you are the product being sold.

The realistic plan

1. Use the free plan properly, with short focused chats rather than one long thread.
2. Check whether you qualify for the teacher offer, or whether someone you know does.
3. If you hit limits weekly and it costs you real time, pay for a month and see whether it holds. Monthly first, annual later.

How to make the free plan go further

1. One task, one chat. The thread is re-read every time you send a message, so a long thread burns your allowance faster than a new one would.
2. Put the document in once, not three times. Re-pasting is the most common way people waste a day's usage.
3. Ask for the shortest useful answer. You can always ask it to expand the part you care about.
4. Use the free plan for thinking and a plain text editor for writing. Drafting in the chat costs tokens every time you tweak a sentence.

How to check a free AI claim yourself

This applies to any tool, not only Claude, and it takes two minutes.

1. Find the company's own page. If the only source is a blog, an affiliate site or a video, treat the claim as unconfirmed.
2. Look for three things: who qualifies, which countries, and when it ends. A real offer states all three.
3. Check what the free thing turns into. A free month that becomes a paid subscription is fine. Not knowing that is not.
4. Search the company's help centre for the offer name. Marketing pages get taken down. Help articles usually stay, and they carry the terms.

Applying those four steps to the AI free access articles currently ranking on search will remove most of them, which tells you something about how much of this is copied rather than checked.
