What hiring on Upwork actually costs — and the $35 that comes back
The marketplace fee, the contract initiation fee, and the discount most people never claim. Plus how the $35 referral gift card really works, including the condition that catches people out.
Upwork's pricing for clients is layered rather than complicated, and the layers are where the surprises live. Here is each one, with the numbers.
The marketplace fee
This is the percentage added on top of what you pay the freelancer, and it depends on your plan:
- Basic plan — 5%. A $100 project costs $105.
- Basic, for eligible US clients paying from a checking account — 3%. That same project costs $103.
- Business Plus — 10%, or 8% for eligible US clients paying by checking account.
The contract initiation fee
A one-time charge per contract, between $0.99 and $14.99. Upwork says it varies with the contract type, your account history and your hiring activity, so you will not always be quoted the same figure.
The practical consequence is the same as Fiverr's flat fee: it punishes many small contracts. Five separate $50 contracts each carry an initiation fee; one $250 contract carries one. If you are hiring the same person repeatedly, one ongoing contract beats a string of small ones.
Business Plus removes this fee, except on fixed-price contracts of $100 or less.
What the freelancer pays
Worth knowing even as a client, because it shapes what people will quote you. Upwork charges freelancers a variable service fee of 0–15% on earnings. A freelancer billing $500 on a 10% contract receives $450.
That range matters when you compare quotes. A freelancer at the top of the fee band has to price higher for the same take-home, so an apparently expensive quote is not always a more expensive freelancer.
A worked example
Hiring one freelancer for a $1,000 project, Basic plan
- Freelancer's rate: $1,000.
- Marketplace fee at 5%: $50. At the US checking-account rate of 3%: $30.
- Contract initiation fee: somewhere between $0.99 and $14.99.
- Your total: roughly $1,051 to $1,065, or about $1,031 to $1,045 on the discounted rate.
So the real overhead on a single sizeable contract is around 3–6.5%. That is materially lower than Fiverr's buyer-side cost on small orders, and the gap narrows as order size grows.
The $35 gift card, precisely
Upwork's referral gives a new client a $35 gift card. The condition is the part people skim past:
It is also specifically for new clients — people hiring. A freelancer joining to look for work is not what this referral is for.
Common questions
Is Upwork free to join?
Joining and posting a job costs nothing. The fees begin when a contract starts and money moves.
Is Business Plus worth it?
It doubles the marketplace fee to 10% and removes the contract initiation fee. That trade only works if you open a great many small contracts. For occasional hiring, Basic is cheaper.
Can I pay a freelancer outside Upwork to avoid the fee?
It breaks the terms, and it removes the escrow and dispute process that is most of what you are paying for. If a freelancer proposes it before you have ever worked together, treat it as information about the freelancer.
